Global AI Adoption: What the Numbers Actually Show

Here's what the data actually shows as of February 2026:

▪ 84% of the world (6.8 billion people) have never used AI
▪ 16% have used a free chatbot
▪ ~0.3% pay for it
▪ ~0.04% use it as a coding scaffold

That means that the global conversation about AI is happening in a room that 84% of humanity has never entered.

And here's the part most people miss: much of that 84% isn't resistant. They lack reliable internet, affordable devices, or any structural access to the tools we debate daily.

Microsoft's AI Diffusion Report puts global gen AI usage at 16.3% in H2 2025. The Global North is at 24.7%. The Global South: 14.1%. That gap is widening.

The diffusion curve isn't stalling. For most of the world, it hasn't had the conditions to start.

We know a lot about what AI early adopters think. We know almost nothing about what 6.8 billion non-users believe, and those beliefs will shape how the next wave adopts.
